Atlas Copco’s new underground navigation system - Total Station - in action at Stockholm’s Northern Link project.

A major step forward for rig navigation: Veidekke’s Anders Östberg, Plant and Machine Management and Olle Sundmalm, Surveyor, both at the Northern Link project in Stockholm, Sweden.

Total Station, Atlas Copco’s underground navigation system, is producing good results at the Northern Link road bypass project in Stockholm, Sweden.

The system uses a tripod that pinpoints known reference points on the drilling or bolting rig. It then locates a prism on the tunnel wall to produce co-ordinates that tell the driller exactly where he/she is to drill.

The system is highly accurate and requires no surveyor to set it up. The rig’s location in relation to the tunnel plan is displayed in the cabin on the Rig Control System’s monitor. Total Station can also be use in conjunction with Atlas Copco’s Tunnel Profiler system to, for example avoid underbreak.
